Afghans for soldiers

To new members and visitors and current members!

We recently made some changes to the site and are in hopes it makes it easier for everyone who visits.

It's hard to believe that Afghans for Soldiers will soon celebrate our six year anniversary. So much has happened throughout this time, which made possible the privilege of becoming acquainted with so many wonderful people and being allowed to touch the lives of many of our wounded military and ill children with afghans.

Someone once said a single rain drop does not make an ocean. It takes thousands and thousands of rain drops coming together to make first a stream, then a river, then a lake, then an ocean.

Afghans for Soldiers began as a desire to express gratitude and appreciation for the service of the men and women of the United States military. After sending an American Flag afghan to a cousin who had served overseas, he asked if I had thought about the need for lap blankets for the wounded soldiers in wheelchairs. He told me there was a VA hospital near him and if I made several more afghans and sent to him he would see to it they were distributed. After that one thing led to another and Afghans for Soldiers came to life and the door opened to new opportunities of making and sending afghans to other VA hospitals.

As word got out about our work requests came pouring in from families who had a husband, son, or other beloved relative, or knew of someone who had  been wounded while serving in the military but were no longer in the hospital. On top of that requests for afghans for children who were fighting cancer and other diseases and having to endure long hospital stays also started coming. Now the crochet hooks really went to town! And they haven't been silent or idle since.

In fact, there were so many requests we soon felt overwhelmed and knew we needed the help of others to fill all the requests.

There are several ways you can help us in this ongoing endeavor.

      • Send us yarn! Lots of it! Clean out your craft closet, or your grandmother's, or go buy a bunch! Then send it to us!

      • Send us crocheted or knitted afghans that you make yourself, have lying around unused and taking up space, or again, clean out grandmother's closets. We'll see to it they get into the hands of soldiers who need them.

      • Make a financial donation! It doesn't matter if it is a dollar, five dollars or any amount you choose. Finances are always needed to mail the afghans and purchase new yarn. Whatever you can give will be greatly appreciated and put to good use. Donations can be made through the “Donations” page above.

      • Perhaps you have an idea of something else you can do to help us. Send us a message through the “Contact Us” page and tell us what you have in mind.

Afghans for Soldiers is one rain drop seeking the help and assistance of other rain drops to make an ocean of afghans for our wounded military. Won't you join with us in some way?

Please know and accept our sincerest gratitude for your support and encouragement!
